This week, 8bitpeoples brought us some new releases, the first one is a 6track EP by Receptors, which is a name I’ve seen before but I cant really put my finger on where so here is a little background check. He is from England, he makes music with gameboys and is behind the project 8bit-operators, -yep, that’s not in your head, the cliche warning bells are definitely ringing! Also, 8bit operators is something he refers to as the chipmusic vanguards (ouch) in their bio. Well they were the ones releasing the chipremix compilation of kraftwerk tunes on astralwerk. Say what you want about that compil, I thought it had a few very nice tracks and a lot of junk. Something that is pretty amazing since kraftwerk music is so good that it should be more of a challenge to make a bad kraftwerk cover than a good one, so kudos to those who managed to do that! I don’t have the compil lying around anymore so I cant see if his track could be included in this rant. Anyway lets get on with the review of his new release!
This time, he has decided to replace an old toy with a new one, – I really hate musicians who refer to their instruments as toys but for the hell of it, ok!, apparently he only used Nintendo DS with a Korg MS-10 emulator this time. Well this sounds promising, Korg-10 is a great synth, but why use a Nintendo DS to emulate it instead of using the real deal beats me. So lets start of with the artwork. It is horrible. Ugly, ugly colors, and it has gameboys on it. My condolences to who ever thought this fake retro style was a good idea. And now, the music.
How does this emulated MS10 sound like? Well, have you ever tried out one of those guitar amps who claim to emulate old vintage amp sounds? Same thing. Add the cheap Nintendo DS sound and too much reverb to that and you will get the picture. But spite the bad sound, the first track, speed dialer, is really good. It has a nice theme and a fairly well arranged buildup. Too bad its not on a real MS10! Spite the good start, the second and third tracks are really bad. The purpose might have been good but the lack of proper sound just makes it annoying to listen to, especially with alot of stereo panning and re verbs all over the place. The compositions seems to have been made without a real idea behind them, like in random. But what do I know, I wasn’t there. I had to skip the fourth track to escape instant headache. But then came the big surprise in the fifth track called re_user revisited, it sounds like a remix of the first track with some really nice bas sound programing. If I would set scores on each track, this would be a 5! It is really smooth together with the first track. Nice work. Then follows the last track, which is called a remix of the first one, even though I would have called it a re-edit since its not that different so cant really do any comment on it.
So to the conclusion. Overall, this EP would have been very interesting if it was made on real hardware or at least with a good emulator instead of the NintendoDS MS10 program. I wouldn’t call it chipmusic since there is nothing from the definition chip in this, so the talk about being 8bit vanguard goes down the drain. Still, the first and fifth track really saves the release from going down the same drain to get the grade OK. And since its a webEP I can take out the tracks I like and flushing the rest. I will check out upcoming Receptors releases with some interest. And till the next time, try to have some cover art that actually have something in common with the music.

The album cover really does like horrendous. I haven’t listened to the release. I don’t think I could stand listening to another cliche 8bitpeoples release to be honest heh.
well i don’t know who the fuck m.enchant is but you have lived under rock the past 6 years. the art is by the amazing OTRO who this entire scene owes a debt of gratitude to!
and i was using the real analog ms-10 before you were born shithead. the nds is a toy as are all video game equipments used as instruments. you are in denial so don’t listen to toy made music.why use the nds instead of real ms-10.stupidest question of all. the ds-10 is an instrument all it’s own. there are countless more parameters and controls and can be controlled with a stylus and is handheld and digital that’s why. maybe stop shoving your nose up dumbmood’s ass for 5 minutes and you’ll be more open minded. and eat me

this review is quite confused. I don’t much care if echant doesn’t like it, seeing as his reasons are hardly cohesive and his tone is snarky and easily dismissed. Personally, I think it’s a really solid release and I’ve a;ways liked Otro’s visual style.
I haven’t listened to the release yet (will get to it soon though), but I have to agree that, even if I generally like Otro’s gfx a lot, this is far from his best work…
the art IS related to the music and the concept i told otro about. the concept of being a ‘user’ is addiction and how it uses you(including music). this art is an interpretational diagram of opioid beta receptors and i love it because it is so different and completely unrelated to video games. and fuck you whoever ‘robert’ is. where’s your music?
I mean, I’m wishing so hard that the album art wasn’t absolutely horrendous. But you can’t just wish things well I suppose. It sucks and you know it.

I don’t really understand what you’re implying… I’m not jewish, so I can rule that out. I do happen to have curly hair (a jew fro). But if you know that about me, well that’s kind of scary. Anyhow. I don’t like the release. If you enjoy it more power to you. I find it to be a peice of trash. This isn’t a community based site. We don’t care what you think.
In other words. Go cry about it at the monthly pulsewave in NYC. We, at least I. Certainly don’t want to hear it. This is the review Data Airlines chose to give. We don’t want to hear Receptors whine about it on our comment board under some anonymous name. I’m sure other sites gave the release a positive review. Be happy about that. Don’t dwell on the fact that we dislike it.

If you made more than 100 releases and sold 20k copies then I guess you must have run into a few bad reviews in your past, did you cry as much every time? And this review wasnt even that bad since it pointed out some good songs, I mean wait untill you get one of thoose really evil reviews… will you go hitler all over the place then?

Data Airlines is not only a label but also a blog and resource for chipmusic, retrocomputing and demoscene related cultures. Hence the reviews & articles. We have many reviewers, some from the chipmusicscene (like random) some thats not related to the scene but also write reviews for comercial mags (like Monsieur Echant). I myself is not the only one involved in Data Airlines, its not a “dubmood project”.
And to answer ksine, i’ve read the review, I dont find it particulary offensive, even though I dont agree with all points made. Claiming the use of 8bit in names as cliche is something everyone should be used to by now? I am not the one deciding what our reviewers get to write or think and honestly, this review is pretty possitive after all. I am not to comment your reaction to it though, nor will I enter any discussion with you about it. But please stop feeding the trolls and if you dont like our blog, then simply dont read it. Thanks.

I personally do not see any personal attacks in the review. What exactly are you referring to, ksine? I do not agree with many points stated in the review, but I do agree with some when they say that it is perhaps unnecessarily harsh or bluntly written. The error of facts adds to this, but the best thing would simply to point out and correct these facts, not become furious.
We’ve had arguments in the past ksine, but now I consider you a friend. I do not take any one’s side in this particular argument, I’m just trying to act diplomatic and sort things out somehow. Don’t ask me why, I guess that’s my character.
