The almost 20 year old tradition of a big German demoparty during the Easter-weekend continues, after Mekka Symposium and Breakpoint it is Revisions turn to gather almost 1000 alcoholized nerds from all over Europe to perform strange ceremonies. As usual, Razor 1911 was present and also competed in the 64kb intro category with an intro called “We accidently borrowed your votedisk” that coded by Rez with music by Dubmood. This time made by an old softsynth for 64kintros created by german demogroup farbrausch. Pretty impressing if you consider that it is all stuffed into 64kb we must say! Check it out on pouet.net here.

You remember the amigacrew Uprough! which I’ve mentioned on this blog? Said group organised a demoparty in Göteborg last week called DataStorm2010. A few weeks earlier I got an email from Louie / TBL asking if I could supply him with music for a C64 demo due to datastorm that he was working on together with Pantaloon / Fairlight. I know I’m Razor 1911 but old rivalry gets boring (and I already broke that rule by making a chip-coop with Bliss / Fairlight on Hype2003). So that was never a problem.

The problem was rather that I never made a SID in my life since i’m all about Atari. So I gave Zabutom a call and due to lack of time we decided to do a remake of my old gameboy electro house tune from 2007 called C’etait mieux en RDA (wich is a mix of Sector 1A to 1D on album with said name). I re-tracked the song with FTII using c64 limitations, or well more or less, and gave it to zabutom who got killer sid skills. He then recomposed the whole thing on commodore and gave it some zabutom touch in the process and the result got lovely. Honestly Zabutom I never heard such a nice SID basedrum in my life of work (and if I have I don’t know where I heard it!)

And the demo? Kickass as expected with such a great lineup as louie and pantaloon.
There is alot of Atari ST related articles in it including interviews with important ppl throughout Atari STs 25 year long history. Who designed thoose tilted Function buttons? How did the ST vs Amiga war start? What went down at Altpart09? Read all about it, oh and try to look beyond the cover-art… or just simply dont judge low rez #2 by its cover.

GEM TOS has been existing as an entity circulating around Data Airlines for a while now, as a repeating voice talking about chiptunes, reasons for skipping school and famous kraftwerk quotes, as a serie of strange sounds and she even featured on Oai Stars latest album clashing about essential ingredients for a good production, or life, or a night out. As hard to interpretade as to know who she is, GEM TOS, more than just an entity circulating around Data Airlines then, like a ghost assuring a certain german attitude in what we put out.

Who she is, we dont think she knows, or cares, but thoose vectors really looks great on her. But to promote her new EP here on Data Airlines we offer you a silly but still exclusive Interview.

Q: Whats the story of the gasmask?
GT: I was born like this, not my fault…

Q: Born with it?
GT: Yes, imagine as a kid in school, no fun!

Q: Whats your general approach when making
a tune?
GT: I just make alot of loops and/or sample some parts of my favourite games and make a beat out of it. When something turns out the way I want it, I give it to Dubmood, he is the one finishing my songs. I am uncapable of working twice on the same song, I have never finished a song in my life. Sad but true. I dont know how many songs is lying around on my floppys. But who cares?

Q: What do you use to make your music?
GT: To me, its important to stay simple, not complicate things with too much buttons or cables, I always make my songs in the same way. I have an Atari ST with MaxYMizer, a TR707, a Big Muff and an Akai S-2000. I sample, sequense and record it in Ableton.

Q: And the vocoder?
GT: No, thats the filter in my gasmask, DDR quality!

Q: Kraftwerk or Jean Michelle Jarre?
GT: Samuel L Session

Q: David Withacker or Rub Hubbard?
GT: Matt Furniss!

Q: Why the Atari and not a Commodore 64, Gameboy or other consoles?
GT: Simplicity, I am a very lazy person, the Atari boots in one second and autostarts maxymizer. I dont even know how to use a C64 and it seems like a mess with thoose big floppys. Gameboys are too hype, and it costs money to get one, especially the cartrigde, blame the hype and all thoose ugly 17yolds making crap on it, its their fault. I would love to try an atari 800xl one day but I guess it will never happen because of my mentioned lazyness.

Q: What can we expect on your upcomming EP?
GT: Dunk Disch Dunk BLEBLEBLEBIPBIPBIP Dunk Disch Dunk BLipbip buweeeeee

Q: Anything else to add?
GT: Thankyou Bob!

—

GEM TOS – Green Computer Interface (DATA008) Is out on Data Airlines since the 31 october and can already be found on Juno, and will be on beatport, itunes and spotify within a couple of weeks. In the meantime, check out her Myspace and ray stuned!
